Cat Ownership – Things to Consider
Cats are among the most popular pet you can own. In the USA it was estimated in 2018 that 47.1 million households own a cat(s) . There are so many recognised breeds available, with Persian and Siamese being amongst the most popular. Cats are a domesticated animal, with evidence having been found that date them back back some 8,000 years and beyond. As with any other pet that you may own, including dogs, cats do cost money so before taking on ownership do make sure you can afford to keep one.
Cat Ownership Essentials
You’ll obviously need food and you’ll also need to plan ahead for the inevitable vet costs. You’ll also need a regular supply of cat litter and a litter box, food dish, and water bowl. Cats are playful things particular when kittens so you should invest in some toys, a scratching post, pet carrier for vacations and trips to the vet and of course a cat bed. It’s also a good idea to invest in an ID Tag in case your new family member strays.
Feline Feeding Time
Wet Food – Feeding your cat will depend a great deal on their age. Older cats require two small meals or one large meal for the day. Kittens on the other hand, require several feedings a day until they reach 12 weeks. Cats that are 3-6 months of age need to be fed three times a day. Canned food can be fed to cats, although any food that has been left out longer than 30 minutes need to be disposed of. If intendning to use canned food you must realise this be expensive and you should always keep in mind that some may need to be thrown away. Cats love canned food but worthy of note is the fact that it doesn’t have any benefits to their dental health like dry food does.
Dry Food – Rather than canned cat food, dry food is a great alternative particularly as you can always leave a supply of dry food out for your pet. Do, when you give your cat dry food, always make sure that they have enough water. When you shop for dry food, you should always look in terms of health and benefits and stay away from generic food. Although generic food may be cheaper, it may not offer the nutrients your pet needs.
If you own a kitten, dont feed adult cat food but kitten food which is designed for their delicate stomachs.
Some Words of Caution
Even though kittens and adult cats like cow’s milk, you should avoid giving it to them as it can cause diarrhea. The occasional treat is fine but too many of them can cause your pet to get fat. Feeding your kitten human food is good on occasion, although you may have to mix it in with his cat food.
Cats keep fairly clean with their own grooming so you don’t have to bathe them very often. Particularly with long haired breeds, you’ll need to give them a brush at least once a day. It will reduce the risk of hairballs and keep your cat’s coat nice and clean.
If you are keeping your cat indoors, you’ll need to have a litter box in an area that is easy for your cat to access. You should lways clear it on a daily basis, and completely replace the litter weekly. Cats don’t like to use dirty litter boxes and they may cause them to resort to performing on the floor.
